Ayahuasca, also called "Mother Ayahuasca," offers a mixture of two different plants — a perennial shrub called chacruna (Psychotria Viridis) and the ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi). The Chacruna contains a substance called dimethyltryptamine or DMT. The DMT in the chacruna creates the experience or "journey," while the ingredients in the vine enable the body to metabolize it.
It’s a powerful plant medicine that offers us the opportunity to understand our true nature by exposing our fears; including, negative thought patterns and self-limiting beliefs.
The journey with Ayahuasca is a slow and steady path towards freedom that will assist you in releasing stress, fear, anxiety, depression, and many other "dis-eases" that are often limiting, resulting in a lighter, brighter, more authentic self.
You’ll gain immense love and a more profound sense of self and your role within the world. We’re honored to assist you on your transformative journey.
"You will be amazed at how things magically fall into place when you let go of the illusion of control." -Maryam Hasnaa
Benefits of Ayahuasca
At Sumanah Soul Sanctuary™, we’ve carefully curated a powerful experience by uniting highly vetted wellness practitioners, indigenous healers, and Shamans to facilitate your journey to wellbeing.
We passionately believe that inner peace comes from treating the mind, body, and spirit. Our wellness programs, activities, and initiatives deliver with the essential tools for internal expansion and transformation.
By experiencing self-love as the gateway to universal love, we transcend deeply rooted societal programming, which has separated us from each other and ourselves.
We work to treat the body as a whole and release traumas and old paradigms. Our work has taught us that the path forward is achieved by expanding inward.
Nutrition & Healing
When working with plant medicines, it’s essential to adhere to a healthy, clean diet before, during, and after your retreat. Eating clean prepares your mind, body, and spirit for your journey with the medicine.
By setting your intentions and being disciplined and committed to the process, you embody the spirit of Ayahuasca that you’re ready to evolve.
Ayahuasca and other plant medicines offer wisdom and knowledge that should be accessed only in a safe environment with proper preparation beforehand. We honor and respect plant medicine and our indigenous teachers. Ayahuasca is not for recreational purposes.
During your stay with Sumanah's Soul Sanctuary, we’ll make sure you feel prepared and supported from the first moment we make contact until you return home.
Once we receive your payment, you’ll be invited into our private Facebook Group, where you can actively stay connected to new friends and integrate all you’ve learned.
What do I do to prepare?
We recommend preparing yourself for the Ayahuasca experience 1 to 2 months in advance of your retreat. Begin a self-care practice such as yoga, meditation, breathwork, clean eating, etc. Be mindful of what you’re consuming.
Start by eating plenty of raw fruits and vegetables, and drink lots of water. Avoid processed foods and try to cleanse your body as much as possible with fresh juices, Epsom salt baths, skin brushing, massage, colon cleanses in the weeks before the retreat to rid the body of toxins.
Mindfulness and meditation will help you to prepare your mind, body, and spirit to get the most out of your experience with us. Mindfulness teaches us to be present, and it's through presence, you can learn to manage your emotions. Meditation can enable you to move through difficult moments and become aware of thoughts and feelings that may arise. These two powerful tools can greatly assist your journey with Ayahuasca.
We also invite you to join Sumanah's Divine Goddess Glow Up Detox™ and purify your Mind, Body, and Soul. *All are welcome to join our detox!
Once you commit to working with Ayahuasca, the medicine begins to work on you, even before you arrive in Tulum. As a result, you may become more sensitive to emotions. Thoughts, fear, or anxiety may arise in the weeks leading up to your retreat. Don't worry; this is an integral part of your healing journey.I AM READY TO COMMIT
Ayahuasca is sometimes described as a mirror. The plant's powerful wisdom comes from its ability to remove the layers of avoidance, reluctance, and procrastination. Ayahuasca may also expose deeply rooted fear, false beliefs, and trauma stored in your body, including generational trauma, effects of racism, PTSD, and negative thought patterns.
The journey with Ayahuasca often brings us face-to-face with our shadow self. It may expose parts of our experience that have been buried deep in our subconscious. Our emotional and energetic blocks often become concealed by alcohol, drug use, unhealthy food, prescription medication, consumerism, materialism, external validation, etc.; Ayahuasca may reveal the root cause.
"The wound is the place the light enters you." - Rumi
Ayahuasca enables us to release the energies that are trapped in our bodies on a cellular level. Letting go allows us to create the space we need to feel the whole experience of infinite love. By focusing on things that raise your energetic vibration, you’ll gain profound insights from medicine.
Medicine common to Central and South America
The process of healing with Ayahuasca doesn't end with the closing of our ceremony. Specifically, what you do with the lessons learned and the healing received is what determines your growth. Integration is just an essential part of our ceremonies.
The earlier you take action on the lessons learned, the better; this includes maintaining a healthy diet, practicing a still mind, and connecting to those who support your process.
At Sumanah Soul Sanctuary™, we provide you with teachers and tools to support your integration while you are with us via group discussions in between ceremonies to help you understand your experience and learn from others.
Holding space for each other, showing kindness and compassion without judgment, and other acts allow us to maintain a safe, inclusive and nurturing environment.
During your free time and excursions, you’ll receive many opportunities to connect with your tribe and nature to share insights about your experience.CONNECT WITH YOUR TRIBE
- Ayahuasca is not compatible with pregnancy.
- Try to avoid synthetic soaps, perfumes, and makeup.
- Avoid chemical bug sprays, lotions, toiletries, etc. - use natural products.
- Plastics - any plastics you bring to the jungle, please take home with you.
Meditation & Yoga
Studies have shown that Ayahuasca has similar effects on the brain as meditation. By practicing awareness of our thoughts without judgment, we cultivate a present awareness and an ability to quiet our minds. Regular meditation practice improves our emotional wellbeing, focus, attention, cognition, energy levels and enhances our immune system, among many other benefits.
Join us for Yoga during your stay. We encourage you to center your mind, lift your spirit, and practice the art of surrendering. Your connection to your breath will assist during your Ayahuasca ceremony.
Pranayama is a system of breathing techniques used to harness and manipulate universal energy known as "prana," which is the Sanskrit word for life force energy. It’s an essential aspect of yoga often incorporated into asana practice, or used as a preliminary step for meditation. Pranayamas are yogic breathing exercises that nurture this life force, bringing harmony between the body, mind, and spirit, making one physically, mentally, and spiritually strong. These practices can quickly release stress, boost the immune system, improve mental clarity, increase vitality (prana), and calm the mind.
Temazcal sweat lodge ceremonies have taken place in Mexico for hundreds of years. Participants will enter a sweat lodge (typically an igloo-shaped hut) constructed from volcanic stone, wood, heavy blankets, or concrete during a Temescal ceremony. Hot volcanic rocks are placed in a pit in the center of the space. Steam is produced by water poured over the stones and herbs such as sage or locally sourced copal. Both assist in our cleansing process. Participants often feel physically, emotionally, and mentally healthier.
*Temazcal is currently not available onsite during this retreat.
Plant Medicine Ceremonies
We Honor the Shipibo Tradition.
For over 2000 years, the Shipibo indigenous tribes in the Ucayali region of the Amazon River basin have been considered the caretakers of the jungle.
Shipibo people maintain many of their ancestors’ customs, including the ritual use of Ayahuasca and other plant medicines of the Amazon.
Perhaps the most crucial aspect of Shipibo culture is their deeply-rooted spirituality, emphasizing plant spirit shamanism.
The Shipibo shamans strive to uphold the wisdom gathered from millennia of living in the world's wealthiest and most biodiverse region. Much of their knowledge comes from the plants themselves, particularly regarding healthcare and their worldview.
Icaros - Healing songs of the plants
The main avenue through which healing takes place during the ceremony is via sound frequency or vibration. A sound is a common form of healing across many ancient and traditional cultures.
Icaros are songs that act as a conduit for the patterns of creation, which then permeate the Shaman’s body, thus bringing harmony in the form of the geometric patterns to rebalance the patient's energetic body.
The Shaman will re-establish the balance by chanting the icaros into the body of the person. The Shaman knows when the healing is complete, as the design is distinct in the patient's body. Often it takes multiple ceremonies to complete this.
Once the completed healing has been achieved in the patient's body, it’s called an Arkana. This internal patterning is deemed as permanent and protective of a person's spirit.
The Shipibo have an ancient and time-honored history of shamanism. They work directly with energy to heal all manner of illness and ailments – both physical and psycho-spiritual. Shaman's go through years of training, apprenticeship, and a masterful training process.
Shamans co-create a team of plant-spirit healers to work with their patients' energetic bodies and heal any imbalances which manifest physically as illnesses, dis-ease, negative thought patterns, and emotional blockages.
Through access to the spiritual world in the form of Ayahuasca ceremonies, they use energy work, and the icaros (healing songs) received from these plants to rebalance the energetic field and "untie" the spiritual knots that contain trapped energies needing to be released. As a result, the patient can release these blockages, gaining awareness and drawing closer to self-actualization – facing, transforming, and integrating their shadow self.
We celebrate our diverse staff and volunteers.
Your time with us will feel like a warm welcome to a new family. Our friendly staff has extensive experience working with the medicines they facilitate and are passionately dedicated to this sacred work.
